The most important META tags are keywords, description and title; the less important tags such as copyright and author should be avoided when possible and used only if it's crucial to do so.

Description tags are generally used in the search engine result pages; it's the blurb that explains to viewers what your site is about. Aim to make your description appealing to surfers to increase the likelihood of them clicking on your listing. The same goes for the title tag as that is also very often part of the listings and used as the anchor text. The keyword tag gives the bots a brief overview of your site's content. Try to use words that are closely related to the main topic of the page; otherwise, you may not pass the spam filter and that can only hurt you in the long run.
